Stephanie & Mark Trumphour

Owners

Ruckus Skis, Boards & Bikes

Age: both 33

The call of B.C.’s mountains brought the Trumphours here from Ontario. Stephanie completed her BA in Outdoor Recreation, Parks & Tourism from UNBC and the two of them worked together to set up shop – literally.

They both had lifelong histories working in recreation shops and ski/board hills, so the time and place was right to start up Ruckus Skis, Boards & Bikes

“We started the business in 2009 from the ground up at the age of 27. We became heavily involved in the cycling and ski community from the start, building bike trails, putting on clinics, and other events. The goal was to bring cycling and ski communities together and grow the sports while making a living doing something we both love.”

Stephanie has been the organizer of ladies’ beginner bike clinics and group rides, plus events at local ski hills, and other volunteer opportunities. Meanwhile, Mark has organized trail-building groups to develop downhill biking spots like the Pidherney Recreation Site, he was head tech on the Tour De Jasper bike event for the past seven years, and more.

Their schedules were busy, and so was the door of Ruckus. They were pleasantly forced to expand, and now the place is double its original size.

“They offer a welcoming environment from the moment their dog greets you at the door,” said one supporter. “They cater to everyone – from the hardcore sponsored athletes, to the weekend warrior, to the parents looking for a run-bike. You never feel dumb when you have to bring in your bike ‘because the thingy is making a weird sound.’”

They are supporters of Bike to Work Week, host PG Cycling Club road rides, do outreach to women, support youth, and contribute to community causes. They don’t promote healthy living and positive recreation because it’s good for business – for Mark and Stephanie, it is the other way around.
