Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, as a member of the Finance team, the Manager, Payroll Services and Systems is an important member of our management and operational teams. This position requires an individual with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality, and an ability to contribute to a positive culture based on mutual trust and respect while delivering results.
As an integral part of the Sinclar team, you will be responsible for providing comprehensive payroll services to our employees and stakeholders. You will provide leadership and guidance for the Payroll Team and support for both hourly and salaried benefit plans. You will perform various functions relating to the processing of semi-monthly salary and bi-weekly hourly payroll including month end accruals, reconciliation of general ledger accounts, and payment of required remittances to external organizations such as Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and retirement plan fund holders.
The Manager, Payroll Services and Systems provides payroll-related support for group retirement and benefit plans throughout the company including deductions and remittances and related reports for group health, life and disability benefits and audits group retirement and benefit plans to ensure compliance with terms and conditions of plans and legislative and regulatory requirements.
In this role, you will ensure compliance with taxation, pension and related legislation and regulation. You will keep abreast of existing and new legislation, and advise management on needed actions. You will also serve as a member of the company’s Retirement Plan Committee with oversight and fiduciary responsibility for company pension plans and other group retirement plans.
Exercising your considerable judgment, integrity and discretion, you will continuously evaluate our payroll processes and work to implement improvements. You bring payroll expertise in identifying, and evaluating opportunities to improve systems and processes, reduce costs, mitigate risks and increase efficiencies.
As an experienced leader, you demonstrate strong and effective communication skills, as well as the ability to inspire excellence in those around you through effective coaching and mentoring. Leading, engaging and inspiring your Payroll team towards technical and professional excellence, you will foster a culture of learning, inclusivity, and teamwork.
As the successful candidate, you will have obtained a recognized professional accounting designation (CPA) or hold a recognized Canadian Payroll Association (CPM) designation with a minimum of five years’ of progressive experience in payroll, preferably in a unionized environment. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Further to this, you are familiar with interpreting and complying with policies, procedures and internal controls to ensure compliance with CRA, federal and provincial legislation, statutory regulations, collective agreement provisions, company and accounting policies. Knowledge, ability and experience in the design, development, management and maintenance of data collection and payroll systems in a computerized environment, including ability to troubleshoot issues associated with payroll information systems is essential.
You demonstrate management experience at a mid to senior level, including experience in supervision and administrative management, and model appropriate professional, ethical and collaborative behaviours consistent with the responsibilities of this position.
