What kind of music does Prince George create? Or perhaps, what does the Prince George/Northern Interior influence sound like? I can’t escape the fact that my musical roots are in this town. I was raised here and this is where I fell in love with music. Even when I moved away as young man with a young family, my songwriting was always reflective of growing up in “a crossroads mill town”.
On my first CD, Directions in a Foreign Tongue, the song You’re Too Far Away speaks of my musical relationship with my older brother who moved away to “a cold little northern town” to get a job and start a family. In the song I reflect on my reaction to the whole experience. I came back to PG in June 2015 to embark on a new creative project that brought together local family members, a film crew from agency.media and sound engineer/producer Andreas Schuld of www.brouhaharecords.com/.
The group set up shop in the home of yet another family member just outside of town on the Hart Highway. The plan was to make music and capture the experience of family connections. The event, which took place over 5 days from June to July 2015, was truly inspirational. The results are being tenderly nurtured to completion for a spring 2016 release.
In the meantime the musicians have reconvened to make some more music, only this time we are taking it live to the people of Prince George and the surrounding area. We will be performing at Shiraz Cafe and Restaurant on November 6th at 7:00 pm and again at Nancy O’s on November 10th at 8:00 pm. The music draws from the “classic” soul of Directions in a Foreign Tongue along with all of the latest iTunes single releases. You might even be fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of songs from the pending new spring release. The music is fresh and timeless and always accessible.
