Celebrating and showcasing local culture is Maeve Hanna’s main professional goal, but on the personal level she goes out and becomes part of it herself.
Maeve is new to the area, moving here about three years ago from Montreal to join the curatorial management staff at Two Rivers Gallery. She instantly became a champion for local artists getting their first shots at this A-class exhibition facility and the significant audience it brings through the doors.
“She brought a ground-breaking Lheidli T’enneh art show into the Rustad Galleria, forging new relationships with aboriginal artists outside the mainstream gallery system,” said a supporter. “As brilliant as she is brawny, Maeve even handled the logistics of moving a giant dugout canoe into the exhibit.”
“I seek to encourage local artists who may have never had an exhibition before,” she explained. “I also mentor these artists by offering a forum for their work to be seen and appreciated within the community.
Maeve is also effective at media outreach to ensure the artists she is showcasing get maximum public recognition. She is a frequent source for CBC Radio, CKPG-TV, The Citizen newspaper and other outlets. Correspondingly, attendance for galleria shows has grown significantly under her leadership.
She also writes articles for several nationally respected art publications.
Maeve is fluent in French and English. She therefore got invited to be a master of ceremonies for the mainstage music festival and medal ceremonies of the 2015 Canada Winter Games, providing French content for a live audience of thousands in Canada Games Plaza.
She arrived with a Masters degree in Art History from the Université du Québec à Montréal with credentials as well from the University of Manitoba, York University and the University of Leeds in the U.K.
With her education, her experience in art, her skills with public messaging, and the support of the local arts community, Maeve has framed her future well.
