If you visit Digital Umbrella Creative’s website, you may end up spending a few seconds playing with the rubber duck logo dominating the centre of the screen. Lakeysha O’Neill is a co-founder of DUC and runs the web design side of the business, meaning she is most likely responsible for that duck.
Lakeysha earned a New Media Communications and Design Diploma in 2013 from the College of New Caledonia (CNC). Since then, she has accumulated five years of design experience in both graphic and web design.
“I am passionate about tech education and about sharing knowledge and experience,” says Lakeysha.
Lakeysha is impacting Prince George positively in numerous ways: through her work as a web developer with DUC, as a key part of Innovation Central and The Hubspace, and as a part-time instructor at CNC,” says one supporter. “Further, she teaches youth coding programs for the library, and is an important catalyst within the Prince George startup and entrepreneurial communities.”
In the fall, DUC will be running workshops to teach entrepreneurs and administrators basic design and web development skills so that they can manage their assets at a lower cost. Lakeysha will also be facilitating and co-organizing Startup Weekend PG 2017/Hacking Health. Lakeysha also designed and taught the Coding for Girls Course offered by Two Rivers Gallery in partnership with Women’s Enterprise Centre at the Prince George Public Library. She encouraged young girls to get into STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), taught high school level math concepts through game making, and taught valuable program design and problem-solving skills.
She also made a website with a giant rubber duck in the centre.
