Dog friendly attractions in Prince George

Before I moved to Prince George, welcoming a dog into my life seemed far-fetched. I lived in small apartments and basement suites without access to green space. We often had more roommates than bedrooms. In Victoria, my sister slept in our basement laundry room for months, and in Vancouver more than one friend crashed on the living room floor for weeks or longer while they attended school or were between rentals. While I loved having extra people around, there just wasn’t space for a large pet. In addition, I had long commutes to work and school, and so most days I was out more than I was home.

We bought our first home in Prince George in 2014. It’s an old four-bedroom house with a big fenced backyard in the Heritage area. We’re within walking distance to two gorgeous dog parks – Moore’s Meadow and Ginter’s Meadow – so when our dog joined our family in 2017, we had plenty of space at home and nearby for her to explore. And, it’s such a short commute to work (less than 10 minutes!) that we can pop home on our lunch breaks to visit her.

Prince George offers beautiful attractions within the city and nearby where dogs are welcome!

Huble Homestead Historic Site

Huble Homestead Historic Site

Huble Homestead Historic Site is one of my favourite places to spend a summer day with my family. My kids love visiting the animals and spending their allowance on jawbreakers from the store, and it makes me happy that I don’t have to leave my dog behind. Dogs are welcome to visit the site, but make sure they’re on a leash and pick up after your pet. Lots of outdoor space and a couple of trails along the river make this a perfect spot for a walk. When we were there in June, we saw a bear and her cub, so be sure to pay attention to your surroundings.

Central BC Railway and Forestry Museum

I was excited to learn that the Central BC Railway and Forestry Museum is dog-friendly! The Railway and Forestry Museum is spread over six acres and is home to locomotives, rolling stock and heritage railway buildings. Most are open so that visitors can climb aboard and take a look around. The Railway and Forestry Museum also features outdoor seating, a wooden train play structure, fruit trees, a gallery space, and a store. Dogs must be leashed during while on site.

CrossRoads Brewing & Distilling

Grab a Cloud 9 Witbier with your favourite furry friend! Not only is CrossRoads Brewing & Distilling home to fabulous pizza and craft beer, but your dog is also welcome to join you if you sit on the patio. One of only a few downtown patios, the brewery overlooks bustling George Street. In the winter, it features a curling rink and outdoor heaters.

These are not the only dog-friendly attractions in Prince George and the surrounding area. You can also take your dog while you’re shopping for locally grown and homemade products at the Prince George Farmers’ Market, for a camping trip at Salmon Valley Campground and to Crooked River Provincial Park which features a Pet Beach.
