About the opportunity:
The Building Inspector handles the oversight of various construction projects, ensuring compliance with the BC Building Code, provincial and federal regulations, and City bylaws. Responsibilities include plan checking, approval of building, demolition, plumbing, sign, and occupancy permits, as well as ongoing enforcement and inspection of residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional developments. Additionally, the Inspector provides valuable advice on construction matters. As more certifications and experience are gained, there is potential for advancement to a higher-level Building Inspector position.
About your background:
Building Inspector 1: Candidates must possess a Journeyman’s Ticket or Technical School Diploma in carpentry, building, or construction technology. They must also hold BOABC Certification Level I for Plumbing and Building. A minimum of 3 years’ experience in enforcing the BC Building Code, bylaws, and Plumbing Code is required. Obtaining BOABC Certification Level II within 24 months is mandatory. Building Inspector 2: Candidates must have a Journeyman’s Ticket or Technical School Diploma in carpentry, building, or construction technology. They must also possess BOABC Certification Levels II and I for Plumbing. A minimum of 5 years’ experience in enforcing the BC Building Code, bylaws, and Plumbing Code is required. Obtaining BOABC Certification Level III within 36 months is mandatory. Building Inspector 3: Candidates must hold a Journeyman’s Ticket or Technical School Diploma in carpentry, building, or construction technology, as well as BOABC Certification Level III. A minimum of 7 years’ experience in enforcing the BC Building Code and related bylaws is required. A valid, full privilege Class 5 BC driver’s license (or out of province equivalent) is required. Also, as a condition of employment, the incumbent must obtain and maintain a clear Police Information Check for offenses related to the position.
