When I first arrived in Prince George, I didn’t know what to expect. As a student who had just moved to Canada to pursue his post-graduate studies, I anticipated a tough start, perhaps working in fast food chains or storage facilities to make ends meet. But from the moment I set foot in this city, I was met with opportunities that I never imagined would come my way.
My journey began at the Hyatt Place, a new hotel in town, where I secured a job as a front desk agent. This role didn’t just provide me with employment; it offered me a gateway to understanding the rich culture of Canadian hospitality. Over the 1.6 years I spent there, I developed invaluable soft skills that helped me connect with the world on a deeper level.
During my first summer break in Prince George, I was fortunate enough to land a job with Tourism Prince George (DMO) as a Visitor Services Counsellor. Here, I was given the responsibility of assisting visitors, and over time, I began to share my ideas and contribute to various projects. My supervisor appreciated my input, allowing me to focus more on other interesting projects. Working at Tourism Prince George was the best experience I’ve had in Canada—a place where I was not only able to do what I loved but also felt genuinely appreciated for my contributions and coworkers felt like family.
Just when I thought I had explored all the avenues available to me, I received an unexpected offer from the general manager of our city’s longest-established hotel COAST. This opportunity brought a new level of excitement, as I joined a hotel renowned for its legacy in the city hospitality industry.
And then, there was the day when I received a call from the City of PG HR department. They offered me a position as an Events Host for the City’s Events and Conference Department. As a student, I never imagined I would be presented with such a unique opportunity from organizations that play a pivotal role in our city’s most leading industry. It was a moment of realization that in Prince George, hard work and dedication do not go unnoticed.
But even with all these experiences, I felt there was something more I could do. That’s when I found an opportunity to volunteer with the Canadian Red Cross as an Administrative Assistant. This role allowed me to explore a completely different industry, yet I was able to apply the hospitality skills I had acquired because, at the heart of it all, people are looking for a safe and welcoming experience.
Prince George is also home to two wonderful educational institutions, CNC and UNBC. These schools are more than just places to study, they are nurturing environments where you can grow, explore new interests, and find the support you need to chase your dreams.
From the Hyatt to the Marriott in hospitality, to Northern Health and BC Cancer in healthcare, to our beloved City of Prince George, and Tourism Prince George supporting our community and local businesses. I would say this city is filled with organizations that welcome newcomers with open arms. If you have something unique to offer, they will embrace you and make you feel like part of our community.
To anyone considering moving to Prince George, my advice is simple: this city has so much to offer, but you have to work hard to uncover the opportunities. Give your all, and you’ll find a community ready to support you, appreciate you, and help you grow.
Prince George is more than a city for me it’s been a place where dreams take root and flourish.
